Synopsis

Youngsoon, who had lived a life of poverty as the daughter of a South Korean prisoner of war, also had an alcoholic and abusive husband, who was a rebel against the system. Unable to endure her husband¡¯s abuse, her eldest son ran away from home in 2004 and went missing. Youngsoon engaged in smuggling trade with China to keep her family afloat. But after the enforced regulations of North Korean authorities put Youngsoon in danger of arrest, she fled the country without finding her eldest son. Unable to adapt to South Korean life, her husband committed suicide in 2013. Youngsoon continues to live her life for her only remaining family, Sosa. She sells toast with Sosa on the weekends and works at a construction site on the weekdays without a single day of rest. Last December, she received a decent apartment. However, Sosa is still unable to adapt to South Korean society. He believes he was abandoned. In North Korea, his honor student brother had received all of his mother¡¯s love, and in South Korea, Sosa moves from factory to factory with the other migrant workers, facing prejudice and discrimination as a North Korean escapee. He would rather return to North Korea. He believes that his mother has abandoned his lethargic self and only thinks about his brother back in North Korea. Youngsoon cannot stand Sosa¡¯s hatred for her. After all, she has spent her entire life breaking her back for her own family. Will Youngsoon be able to restore her crumbling family?
