Synopsis

In this hybrid documentary, a female director and climate activist travels across Pakistan after a devastating climate disaster, using the game of consequences to collect tales of hope, resilience, and survival from those impacted by the crisis. The film covers three chapters: starting from the north, where melting glaciers cause havoc, followed by floods and droughts in other regions. The director employs a multi-layered narrative approach, inspired by the surrealist concept of Cadavre Exquis, to capture the collective memory and hopes of rural Pakistanis affected by climate change.

She travels through Pakistan inviting locals to contribute to the story by adding in their own words and in their own way before passing it on to the next person. As part of the game, the director actively connecting the various stories together to create a strong central narrative for the film. Through real and re-enacted stories, the film portrays Pakistan drowning in the devastating climate crisis, serving as a call to action in a critical moment for our planet.

Director's Statement

This hybrid form really appeals to me in Climate of Consequences because the theme of climate change is such an enormous topic. The 2022 floods were so vast across Pakistan that I feel that adding my own fictional elements will allow for the ideas to be tackled in a way that can be ingrained deeper in our collective memory and history. Using multiple people's voices and accounts, and re-enacting them, will allow me to weave this unique visual tapestry to create a bigger picture of the climate crisis in Pakistan.

With this debut documentary feature, it is a privilege and an opportunity to portray the huge topic of climate change with a nuanced and highly creative approach. I hope to remind the wider audience of the power of storytelling to spark change, the indomitable human spirit, and shared hopes for a just world.
