As a Filipino-German directing team we believe that this combination of our lenses provides a layer of complexity and nuance to our storytelling. On the one hand, A House in Pieces is a deeply Filipino film, acknowledging the ambiguities of reality and unresolved issues in the country. At the same time, we have been frustrated about how Filipino topics are often portrayed and stereotyped. We would like to tell this story as a universal and relatable human experience which resonates far beyond the country. Working on this film, we have discovered the power of the small stories that speak of the experiences of ordinary people caught in extraordinary circumstances. We believe that making their voices heard is empowering.
