Synopsis

One day, Choi Jinbae receives some photos and videos from Myanmar. Choi Jinbae, who had done voluntary work in Myanmar five years earlier, was back in Korea working as an interpreter and translator when he received news from Myanmar after a long time. The photos he received were images of a devastated neighborhood including the remains of burned-out motorcycles, bloodied stairs, and collapsed houses. The people of Myanmar asked Choi Jinbae to let the world know what was happening in their country. While studying and working in Korea, Nyein Thazin, a native of Myanmar, receives news of a coup in Myanmar. She immediately starts worrying about her family in Mandalay. She continues to talk to her father in Mandalay and hears about the brutality of the military in real time. Finally, Choi Jinbae and Nyein Thazin decide to help Myanmar¡¯s struggle for democracy.

Review

In February 2021, the military in Myanmar detains State Counselor Aung San Suu Kyi by claiming that the general election held three months ago was carried out illegally and stage a coup. Although the people of Myanmar protest, saying that their country should not revert to a military dictatorship, the military crusades against those calling for democracy.

This story in Myanmar is not unrelated to Korean society. Things happen in the world that do not make sense. Who would have thought a year ago that Ukraine and Russia would be at war? The same goes for the coup in Myanmar. For a decade, the people in Myanmar had believed that their country had settled into a democracy with the party led by Aung San Suu Kyi in power. However, military dictatorship has returned and the people of Myanmar are now regretting their lack of oversight of power. In turn, we need to look at our own situation in Korea. Is our democracy so firmly entrenched that there is no turning back? It is my hope that this film serves as a mirror to remind us of the importance of being vigilant.
