2025 The Netherlands Embassy - DMZ Docs
Documentary Co-production Funds Overall Evaluation
The DMZ International Documentary Film
Festival, in collaboration with the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands
in Korea, has jointly established a co-production fund to promote cultural
exchange between documentary filmmakers from Korea and the Netherlands and to
support the international presence of Korean documentaries. A selection
committee, composed of filmmakers from Korea and the Netherlands, reviewed
submissions based on the relevance of subject matter and themes, the maturity
of project concept, and the suitability for co-production. As a result, one
feature-length project and two short-length projects were selected for support.
The selected feature-length project, Made
in Korea – Out of the Fog, represents an ideal example of international
co-production. It brings together directors and producers who have long been
dedicated to the creation and distribution of documentaries in both countries
and tells the autobiographical story of a Korean-born director adopted to the
Netherlands. As the highly anticipated follow-up to the director¡¯s 2006 film Made
in Korea: A One Way Ticket Seoul-Amsterdam?, which resonated widely with
Korean audiences, this project reflects the filmmaker¡¯s evolving artistry and
thematic commitment.
The two selected short films, Autobiography
and How to Lie, Femme, and Pass, are made possible through the
combination of the Netherlands' inclusive cultural support policies and the
active engagement of Korean directors working internationally. Created by
filmmakers with a background spanning both visual arts and cinema, these
projects are expected to fully embrace the creative freedom and experimental
spirit unique to the short film format and yield meaningful artistic results.
