Synopsis

The 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Paralympics Closing Ceremony stage. Ko Ahra, a hearing-impaired ballet dancer in a white dress, performs on the stage. It was the stage of her life, yet Ko, faced with the dilemma of not being able to understand music, which is the essential element of dance, enters a period of introspection after this.

Wonwoori has been studying the various areas of hearing senses while working on making music that suits the hearing-impaired. He analyses Ko¡¯s hearing senses as she is due to give birth, and composes a lullaby that both Ko and her child could listen to together and connects with each other. Until this moment, music for Ko has been nothing but a signal to begin and end her dance. Through the lullaby, Ko, for the first time in her life, feels music with her heart.

Gaining confidence and certainty about music through this experience, Ko strives to make music that is perceivable in all available sensory venues of the human body and prepares for a performance on the stage of her life for the second time.

Review

Music is an art with the tremendous power of communication. Yet if music remains the sole subject exclusive only to the hearing-abled, its power cannot help but be limited in scope. Every subject of communication in the world lives within diverse sensory conditions of their own, respectively. Our society sets a specific set of unilateral and arbitrary standards and categorises all those who cannot meet them as disabled. Music with no consideration for the existence of these various hearing senses has contributed to this reality. Ballerina Ko Ahra and Composer Wonwoori challenge these standards. Dismantling these set standards will lead to breaking down the barrier between the disabled and the able-bodied and the wall of idée fixe that has blocked communication in the society. This documentary began with a ¡°cheeky¡± intent to redefine music through the hearing-impaired artist.
