Synopsis

Golbahar has a dream. She wants to reconnect with her childhood memories and the traditions of her people, the Bakhtiari, a nomadic tribe from southwestern Iran. The Bakhtiari have been migrating for generations, during the summer and winter seasons. These huge migratory events, which saw the movement of some 500,000 people and up to one million animals over the massive Zagros Mountains, are unique in the world. In 1976, the American director Anthony Howarth spent two years with Bakhtiari nomads to shoot the extraordinary documentary People of the Wind, which was nominated for an Oscar. During these times, the Bakhtiari nomads used to travel on foot for eight weeks under very difficult conditions. Golbahar was one of these nomads. She was only eight years old when Howarth shot the film. Golbahar has not walked the traditional migration trail ever since her marriage. According to Bakhtiari tradition, women are responsible for household chores and animals. When they have raised their children, they become more respected and have more time. This is when Golbahar starts to dream about migrating again. But her husband and children have other plans. Golbahar fears for a grey, depressing future.

Review

I have an intimate knowledge of the Bakhtiari because I am one of them. I was born in a Bakhtiari village and lived there until six years ago. I decided to make a film about Golbahar, who is like my mother, and all the other women like her as their families always decide for them, yet they are never happy with these decisions and their voices are never heard by anyone. I previously made the movie The Snow Calls, also about a woman affected by the decisions of men. It was shown in IDFA, Big Sky and DMZ and this encouraged me to start making my next movie (A Woman¡¯s Path). Golbahar fails to achieve her goal and apparently admits defeat, but she represents all women with big dreams fighting to achieve their ambitions and visions. What matters most is the fact that they are fighting for their rights, beliefs, and thoughts. Regardless of the outcome, we are constantly fighting. I am a strong like my mother and Golbahar, and want to bring this message to the world.
