My mom Lee Yunjeoung had lived as a devout deacon in church for over 30 years, consistently going back and forth between church and home. Yet since the sinking of MV Sewol in 2014, she no longer went to church. After she stopped her church activities, Yunjeoung came to work for a human rights organization for immigrants in Ilsan as a part time worker. She has difficulties with working a computer, the various paperwork, and services for foreigners. The COVID-19 pandemic has, since 2020, seen an increasing number of foreigners detained in the foreigner detention center (for the detention of foreigners subject to forced departure). That makes Yunjeoung over-burdened. 

I begin to help Yunjeoung while working beside her, and build a relationship with the people Yunjeoung meets. Though I started with good intentions, I grow more confused by the day. I arrive at an uncomfortable thought – is there a difference between an unwillingness to be disturbed, and a willingness to be disturbed? Perhaps hospitality might not feature a kind voice, smiling face, nor aesthetically beautiful shape.
