Synopsis

Granddaughter Yeojin and her maternal grandfather Park Jongwoong made a promise to write a letter to each other once a month in her youth. In her world, everyone lives a life having neither big problems nor disabilities. When Yeojin saw a nurse and her grandfather in hospital communicate in writing, his letters began to take on a new and deeper meaning. She begins to write back a delayed letter to him and points a camera toward him. My grandfather Park Jongwoong developed a hearing disability after a falling accident at 47 years old, and then could not realize his dream of becoming the president of a construction company. But he, even now 79 years old, dreams of a new dream every single moment. Especially when Jongwoong picks up cast-away or out of-order things and thinks of how to remake them into something useful. But her grandmother does not want him to wander outside. Grandmother Jumnam has unknown bitter feelings after having lived all her life as his caretaker. Family members come to know how they have regarded him. Her grandfather¡¯s old diaries contain notes on his enduring his disability after the accident and his hopes towards the life he has lived. What is it that has made him the one unable to achieve things? Yeojin tries to support his dreams.

Review

Do disabilities define a person? When we meet someone, we naturally come to discover her/his identity. The disabled like Park Jongwoong are not visible in this nondisability-centered society. When someone identified as disabled is seen our everyday lives, we often view them pitifully, avoid them, or unintentionally discriminate against them. In a world built to stop them from being seen, don¡¯t we all have a hearing disability if we cannot hear their voices? Whenever discovering discrimination among the various definitions that describe Park Jongwoong¡¯s identity - ¡®senior¡¯, ¡®disabled¡¯, ¡®elderly man¡¯, and more - the film tries to reveal what has to be changed first is not his but our perspective. While observing Park Jongwoong¡¯s challenging yet dignified life, it aims to discover aspects of modern society which sees disability from our inner bias. Furthermore, it tries to find the point where we can sympathize without being locked in preconceived notions of ¡®identity¡¯ when we face each other.
